Mobile marketing case study: Orange Wednesdays – the world’s longest running mobile marketing campaign comes to an end

Wednesday 25th February 2015 marked the end of Orange Wednesdays, one of the most successful sponsorship and reward programmes ever seen. The deal, which gave customers on the Orange (and subsequently EE) mobile network two for one cinema tickets on a Wednesday was launched over a decade ago. The campaign was highly successful in terms of brand awareness and customer retention for the mobile network.

Evian baby takes on Spider-Man with SnapChat teaser

Evian has continued its hugely successful dancing babies series with a new ad featuring Spider-Man, as the new superhero movie hits the cinemas. Evian’s social media agency We Are Social create buzz around the video with glimpses of the ad sent to the brand’s Snapchat followers on Saturday 21 March. Laurence Foucher, the global digital manager for Evian, said of the decision to introduce the ad on Snapchat: "Snapchat’s ephemeral nature is perfect for sending teasers to build excitement, which makes it the perfect platform to preview our next campaign."

Twitter case study: How Samsung won the 2014 Oscars with a star-studded selfie

At the 2014 Oscars, Samsung took the award for most talked about brand with a celebrity-packed selfie tweeted by host Ellen DeGeneres using a Galaxy Note 3 phone. Devil Baby stunt terrorises New Yorkers to get 36m views

How do you go about promoting a horror movie about a devil child? There are all the usual routes--TV ads, billboards, websites, trailers--but perhaps the best way to convey the spirit of the film is to actually scare the living hell out of people with an actual devil baby. Following on from the success of Carrie’s YouTube prank last year, the makers of 20th Century Fox’s latest horror movie ‘Devil’s Due’ have used a similar tactic to great effect- getting over 36m views in the process.

YouTube case study: Coke turns commuters into 007 in race for tickets

Coca-Cola continues its Coke Zero marketing tie-in for the upcoming James Bond movie release with a promo that turned commuters into 007, for 70 heart-pounding seconds, all for the chance to win Skyfall tickets. Filmed in Antwerp central station, commuters who wanted a Coke Zero were given the chance to win tickets to see the new Bond film Skyfall. However, once they entered their name, they were given 70 seconds to collect the tickets at the other side of the station. What ensues is a mad rush filled with obstacles as they sprint to platform 6 to get the ticket. The “Unlock the 007 in you” video went viral, with over 3.8 million views and counting within 5 days of its YouTube release on 18 October 2012.

The Muppets 'Pig With The Froggy Tattoo' Teaser Trailer gets 10m + views

After a 12-year break from the big screen, Disney needed to reinvigorate interest in the Muppets brand ahead of their forthcoming movie. Throughout the year, Disney has been running spoof trailers on YouTube mimicking popular movies at the time, giving The Green Lantern, The Hangover Part 2, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Twilight, Puss in Boots, Captain America, Twilight and Paranormal Activity a muppets twist. Meanwhile, the opening trailer Green with Envy began as a generic romantic comedy, but it quickly shape shifted into a trailer for The Muppets. The Muppets marketing encompassed nearly everything in pop culture and in doing so it gained the attention of millions around the world.

Viral marketing case study- Prometheus end credits image leads cinema goers online

To promote it’s latest sci-fi blockbuster Prometheus, 20th Century Fox has run a viral marketing campaign to maintain online buzz before, and after, the films release. For cinema goers that stuck around for the end credits of Prometheus, they were directed to a new website. Created by Scott's own RSA production shingle, those videos are the latest example of a shift beyond the usual teasers and trailers. Their aim: to turn hardcore fans into mini-marketeers by giving them something unique to share with their less-engaged online friends.

Interactive mobile ad unit drives trailer views for Universal’s ‘The Wolfman’

Universal used AdMob’s Interactive Ad Unit on mobile to create buzz around the brand and encourage brand engagement.

With the use of AdMob’s auto-play interactive a units and text and banner ads Universal created a buzz resulting in 31% increase in the intent to view its upcoming movie ‘The Wolfman’. The campaign resulted in 69% increase in mobile ad awareness and a 31% increase in both release date association and intent to see the film.

Avatar page takeovers attract high engagement and dwell rates

Twentieth Century Fox used interactive advertising to promote the Blu-Ray and DVD release of blockbuster film Avatar, resulting in a 35% higher than average dwell rate. The campaign used a homepage takeover and interactive video to showcase the video content and recreated the interface from the film.

Case study: Predators game and expandable creates buzz and engagement

Twentieth Century Fox created an interactive game and expandable banners to promote action horror film Predators, resulting in high dwell rates and brand advocacy. The campaign used expandable banners, featuring an interactive game (complete with with blood spatters). The game gave users the opportunity to choose their weapons and engage with brand via the game. The gamification enabled users to experience the storyline of the film and also enabled to enter a global MPG. The average dwell time for the campaign was 35.7 seconds 80% above benchmark and the average dwell rate 8.27% nearly 10% higher than benchmark.

Inception’s Rich Media homepage takeover smashes CTR benchmarks

Warner Brothers used a striking rich media campaign to drive awareness of the DVD released of blockbuster movie Inception, achieving much higher than average dwell rates and click through rates as a result. The campaign employed a user-initiated video within a banner on gaming website GameSpot, showcasing the movie’s special effects. Warner worked with CBS interactive and used Media Mind’s Glider takeover format. The ad begins with the homepage falling towards the user, revealing the world of Inception. The ‘fallen back’ homepage remains visible throughout the experience, so the user maintains a connection to the GameSpot site while exploring the ad. The Dwell rate for Glider Takeover was 21.87%, 268% improvement over the benchmark & CTR was 247% improvement over the benchmark

How Sony pictures used rich media to create buzz for 3D film Smurfs

To promote the Smurfs film in Malaysia, Sony Pictures used interactive rich media ad formats to closely engage with the target audiences and generate high dwell rates. The campaign’s tone was fun and entertaining, to keep in line with the feel of the movie.

This case study shows how, with rich media advertising on MSN and MSN Messenger, Sony Pictures got viewers to engage with the brand on the website itself. Users spent and average of 146.36 sec on the banner and the average dwell rates of the campaign were 8.62%, which is above the benchmarks of Malaysia. The campaign was targeted toward the key audience of the movie- teens and young adults age 12-25 and parents with children age 5-12 years. The purpose of the campaign was to create viral buzz about the movie and drive ticket sales for the release of the movie.
